Revisiting Tiger & The 49ers: No. 6, Sergio Garcia
Before the 2009 season began, we ranked every golfer in the world in our massive Tiger & The 49ers list. All this week, we'll be revisiting those rankings, seeing how well we did and whether we ranked them correctly. Next up: the guy who's always next up.
No. 6: Sergio Garcia
His 2009: One Top 10 finish (tenth at the U.S. Open), FedEx Cup rank: 113
The story: It's never gotten started for Sergio this year. He's had his difficulties off the course, yes; as he's mentioned in the past, a breakup caused some of his poor play. He bottomed out when he popped off about the "poor" conditions at Augusta, and while he's started to recover -- a strong finish at Bethpage, three solid days at Turnberry -- he's got a long way to go to get back to where he ought to be.
After all, this is Sergio Garcia, and he's got 112 guys ranked ahead of him on the FedEx Cup list? He's only got one top-10 all year? Come on, Sergio, get it in gear!
Up or down? Gotta be down. Sergio didn't seem to be playing as badly as his stats would indicate, but numbers don't lie. He's not on his game this year, and after a year in which he won the Players Championship and placed second to Camilo Villegas in the Tour Championship, we expected so much more than that.
