Revisiting Tiger & the 49ers

His 2009: Two top 10s; best finish: T2 at the Mercedes-Benz Championship; FedEx Cup rank: 38

The story: Kim came into 2009 with all the momentum in the world, and seemed poised for a great season when he tied for second at the season-opening Mercedes. But from there, it was a run of frustrations punctuated by occasional triumphs, like his record-setting birdie round at Augusta and his tie for 3rd at the AT&T National. All too often, though, he made poor choices or got himself into trouble he couldn't play his way out of, as when he torpedoed his recent British Open hopes with a quintuple-bogey on the second hole of his second (and final) day.

Up or down? Down, well down. Kim was probably ranked too high here to start with, but hey, give us a break -- we were floundering, looking for a Tiger replacement. He'll be a top-flight golfer soon enough, but he's still got a ways to go before he's there.
